I found this Sonobe Assembly Guide [pdf] by Meenakshi Mukerji, and an even better online instruction by Jill Britton, which is a little more detailed. There's also a tutorial on deviant art I found a tutorial for making a Sonobe cube.

Good To Hear Of Kids Having Fun

Hi Sol!

Glad to hear that you found this post helpful, but especially that it resulted in a couple of kids having a fun time.

Strong paper cube: same technique using cardboard, but sounds like this would violate your requirement (paper only). Or you could stuff the cube with (toilet-) paper, just before you close the last side. Sorry I don't have any (useful) ideas for you.

Bright Regards
JasonMR

Crazy Paper Cube - a great project for kids!

I was looking for something else (a way of building a strong paper cube, using just paper and tape - don't suppose you've got any ideas?), but thought this was also an interesting adaptation for my 9 year old's homework: "Make a cube out of paper". I guessed he would need some help, and was, in fact, dubious as to whether his cutting, folding and taping capabilities would be up to the job, but was very pleasantly surprised when he managed nearly half the work himself, and the cube functioned perfectly!

All our kids were bowled over by it (even the nearly 13 year old couldn't successfully hide how impressed she was !!), and my 9 year old just HAD to take my slightly modified version of your template (I squeezed 8 copies of the mini cube onto one sheet, along with the link to your site for the video - a really perfect way to show someone how to make it!) into school for his teachers.

So, just wanted to let you know that your page made for one of the most interesting bits of homework my son has ever had !!

Loved the photo from Mars. Food for thought. Makes me wonder just what/who is out there.
Think the boys would love it.
